KARACHI: Police have arrested the gunman involved in a shooting during a protest in Karachi. The suspect, identified as Mairaj, opened fire on demonstrators in the Ramswami area. Authorities recovered a weapon from his possession. The shooting followed a tragic incident where a garbage dumper ran over a motorcyclist, killing him and injuring his wife.
The protest erupted when locals, angered by the accident, damaged the dumper and set it on fire. Reports said Liaquat Mehsood, President of the All Dumper Truck Owners Association, arrived at the scene with 20-25 armed men. They opened fire on the protestors before fleeing towards the Garden area while continuing to shoot.
Police have registered two cases at the Garden Police Station. One case is against the dumper driver, Niaz, while the second is against Mehsood and his armed associates. The charges include culpable homicide and negligence. Authorities have launched raids to arrest Liaquat Mehsood, who remains on the run.
This incident is part of a growing trend of road accidents involving dumpers in Karachi. A similar tragedy occurred a day earlier near Hospital Chowrangi in Landhi, where a speeding dumper ran over two motorcyclists. One of them, 20-year-old Kashan, was killed, while the other, 19-year-old Javed, was injured.
The increasing number of accidents has sparked public outrage. Citizens are demanding strict action against reckless drivers and better enforcement of traffic safety laws. Many are calling for greater accountability and measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
